Kaitlyn Wynne, NP & Dr. Mary Elhardt: Serving Beyond the ED

At EM Alliance, we believe that the commitment to exceptional patient care doesn’t stop at the emergency department doors. For Kaitlyn Wynne, NP and Dr. Mary Elhardt, two of our providers based in Amarillo, Texas, that commitment carried them all the way to Santa Ana, El Salvador.

Recently, Kaitlyn and Dr. Elhardt traveled to El Salvador as part of a combined medical and dental mission with the Full Smile Foundation (FSF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering compassionate, high-quality healthcare to underserved communities. The mission was hosted on the campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Santa Ana (UNASA), a secure and welcoming environment that served as the hub for a truly transformative week of care.

As leaders of the medical team, Kaitlyn and Dr. Elhardt worked alongside more than 20 dental professionals, collectively seeing over 350 patients across three intensive days. The clinical scope was broad and demanding, precisely the kind of environment where emergency medicine training shines. The team performed joint injections and provided pharmacotherapy for a wide range of conditions including hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and gastritis, in addition to managing other urgent care needs as they arose.

What makes this mission particularly meaningful is the model behind it. The Full Smile Foundation’s partnership with UNASA goes far beyond episodic outreach. In addition to direct patient care, the 2025 mission included clinical teaching, advanced technique sharing, and a MEDEVAC course with helicopter practical application, equipping UNASA’s faculty and students with skills and knowledge that will continue to benefit the community long after the team returned home. It is exactly the kind of sustainable, relationship-centered approach that creates lasting change.

For Kaitlyn and Dr. Elhardt, working in a resource-limited environment means leaning fully on clinical judgment, adaptability, and the efficient, prioritized decision-making that defines emergency medicine. Without the safety net of advanced diagnostics, every assessment becomes an exercise in presence and precision, qualities they bring to their work in Amarillo every single day.

We are proud and grateful to have providers like Kaitlyn Wynne and Dr. Mary Elhardt on the EM Alliance team, individuals who give generously of their expertise, their time, and their care. Their work in El Salvador is a reflection of the values that define this organization, and we are honored to celebrate it.
